Primary dysmenorrhea has been defined by ACOG as a medical condition of pain during menstruation that interferes with daily activity. In the Journal of Adolescent and Pediatric Gynecology, Rakhshaee evaluated the effect of 3 yoga poses (Cat, Fish, Cobra) on symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea. Ninety-two female students (ages 18-22) were randomly assigned to a treatment and control group, and recorded pain levels over 3 menstrual cycles. Students in the treatment group demonstrated a significant decrease in pain intensity and duration. Authors conclude that yoga may be a safe and simple treatment for primary dysmenorrhea.
